Saalik - 5th Grade Teacher

Saalik was born in Puerto Rico, grew up in Brooklyn, NY and currently lives and works in North Jersey. He is a product of the NYC public school system, starting community college and his first "real" job on Wall Street in 1975. He moved to NJ with his young family in 1981 and soon was volunteering at his sons' school, teaching multicultural history and culture workshops. The local library soon found out about his workshops, hired him as a librarian's assistant and he has been working part time for them ever since.  He left Wall Street in 1991, began working as a teacher's assistant for the local Board of Education, and enrolled at a four-year state university.  By 1997, he had graduated cum laude and began teaching 4th grade students. He is currently employed as a 5th grade Language Arts/Social Studies teacher.  When asked why he made such a considerable career change, from Wall Street to teaching, Saalik stated that he was tired of making money for other people and wanted to make a significant impact in the lives of young people.  He has never regretted the decision and 11 years later is still delighted to have made the switch.
